Yeah, I said it. Domaining sucks. Investing in domains doesn’t work
for a lot of people. It would take me like eight hands to count how
many people I know that have failed miserably when trying to buy and
invest in domains.
But, in all fairness, if Domaining Sucks so bad, then why are so
many sites out there sitting on domains and making a whole bunch of
money. Who are these domainers out there who are successfully investing
in domain names? And what are they doing that makes Domaining Not Suck
So Bad? And why do they have a Ferrari and all the newbie domainers are
driving a Moped?
Let’s Take a Look at the Top 4.5 Reasons Why Domaining Sucks and How the Domain Rocks Stars are Beating That Suckiness:
1. Google: You show me someone who doesn’t know
Google, and I’ll show you someone who has lived in a hole in the Sahara
for a decade. The sad truth is that Google wants to put domain squatter
out of business.
Yeah, Google wants to make domains worthless… because it’s not about
the quality of the domain name when everyone finds the sites through
google. So how does a lowly Domainer beat the mighty Google?
ANSWER: People still do type in web addresses into
the tool bar. Especially old people and people who aren’t web-savvy.
And even though people are eventually getting more web savvy, there is
also a growing number of new internet users who are still going to be
typing in domains for a long time. Also, the URL of a website still
makes a significant difference when it comes to the Organic Rankings of
a page in the Google Search Results. End result? You can sell
beaniebabies.com to the beanie baby site because it will help their
rankings. So in that way, Google made the sale for ya!
2. Other Domainers: Yeah, there is competition. And
they are good at what they do. And some of them are huge kick-ass
companies that eat shit for breakfast. Yup, poop for breakfast. And of
course the Domain Registrars are getting first dibs on all of GOOD
domains as their customers forget to renew them. So what’s a domainer
to do?!?
ANSWER: Use your smarts and time wisely. The big
guys always leave a lot of scraps, and they can’t monetize a site as
well as you can if they own 3 million other sites. So focus on adding
value where they are too big to, and you’ve just outflanked the poop
eaters.
3. Expensive Tools that Kick Butt: Yes, it’s true
that some of the huge players in the domaining industry have great,
million-dollar tools that give them a small leg up.
ANSWER: History shows that a bunch of passionate
individuals can bring down the big guys. Look at the French Revolution
for God’s sake. Anyway, there are some pretty great Domaining Tools
that we can actually get on the open market for a good price. Here’s
some of the best:
- Snap Up Domain Names the Second they become available with ENOM. This program will sit on your computer and send thousands of requests
to domain registrars the SECOND a domain name becomes available so you
can get it before everyone else. It’s pretty simple, works quickly, and
you don’t want to be without this program when sex.com or shoes.com
comes available by some fluke. Learn more about ENOM by clicking here
- Monetize and Edit all of your domains from one place. If you are doing everything right, then you are going to get a lot of
domain names pretty quickly. And you aren’t going to want to edit each
one by hand every time you sell ad space on it, or want to redirect it,
or want to sell it. So if you want to be able to handle these domains
all from one spot… tracking, ads, content, and everything…. you are
going to need a world class tool to make that happen. That’s what
Domain Dashboard does. Check out some videos about Domain Dashboard
here and then try to remember what life was like before you got it. Learn more about Domain Dashboard here.
- Sift through thousands of expiring domains names by the hour or day. You just can’t be everywhere at once. You need some sort of tool to let
you know when a domain expires that you might want. And who has time to
check into a service every hour or day to see what’s available? Even if
you have that time now, you won’t in 6 months if your Domaining
business is going great. And that’s why JustDropped has made a little
program that sifts through all of the expiring domain names and will
EMAIL you a list that meets your criteria. So you could save, for
instance… I want all keywords with the name “feet” in them, that end in
a .com, and I want that email delivered every few hours. Or any
variation on this. So now you can grab sweet, relevant, keyword-rich
domains without having to sweat over lists of worthless and irrelevant
domains. What more could you want? Learn more about JustDropped here.
So the trick is to let computers do what they do well. Let them sort
everything and do the heavy lifting for you. Build a strategy that
involves a couple of great tools, and you’ll be able to compete with
the giants.
4. Time and Money: You might be saying… “Well Gee.
It takes all this time and money to get a good portfolio going. And I’m
not getting much in return while I sit here buying domains. And it’s
sunny outside, and I just can’t wait around forever for these domains
to turn a profit.”
ANSWER: Have you seen the stock market lately? Stop
bitching. The S&P 500 hasn’t made any money (when indexed against
inflation) over the last 10 years. I don’t have any figures on domain
name ROI, but I’m sure it’s something extremely positive.
When you invest in anything, you need time and money. Domain Names are the same.
4.5 Not Enough Info Available for the Beginner: I can’t find any credible sources that are also entertaining to teach me the basics of investing in Domain Names.
ANSWER: Oh really? Well what exactly is this site, chopped liver?!?! |
