Mobile internet usage is on the rise

Dot Mobi is an extension that is unique in nature and is still quite controversial when it comes to its significance. Some people agree that dot mobi has a great potential and will gain popularity in the years ahead while other underestimates its importance. The majority of the global public is still pretty unfamiliar with it.

The official introduction of .mobi was in 2005. This top-level domain was elaborated specifically for mobile internet and for that reason it was tied with some requirements. First, .mobi is designed only for mobile Internet site development. It is a compulsory prerequisite, just like .edu is used only by educational institutions for educational purposes. And second, in order to ensure quick loading on mobile devices the markup language used for development is XML with Java.

We can hear everywhere that the era of the mobile internet is at hand. Globally there are more cell phones than PCs but the portion of cell phone owners using the mobile Web remains relatively small. Nevertheless, the percentage of those who use mobile Web grows daily and thus provides a potential audience for Dot Mobi sites. In addition to the support that companies like Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Ericsson, Vodafone and much more give for the integration of the mobile internet service, there is obvious need of advertising and educational campaigns aiming to reach the end user. The mobile networking audience is still in its infancy and mobile internet seems far from being mainstream. The tipping point is yet to come.

Some enthusiastic domainers believe that dot mobi will have the same large-scale success as .com, but it still sounds pretty improbable. The cost of .mobi remains higher than that of .com, .net, and .org. After registering of domain, the owners should be focused on providing a place for websites optimized for the small screens of mobile phones. A few .mobi sites do currently exist, though their number keeps on increasing each day. It seems essential variety of businesses to get involved in registration and development of .mobi sites in order to draw users’ attention which will result in a larger acceptance of mobile internet usage.

On the other hand, millions of cell phones have mobile browsers installed on them, and those browsers can automatically reformat web content for the small screen. Such technology might act as a break for the further full-scale mobile website development. Why the companies should develop mobile site, if their existing sites already look acceptable on the small screen? Isn’t it cheaper and easier just to redirect a .mobi address to an existing dot-com website instead?

Although the dot mobi meets some obstacles, mobile internet usage steadily increases. The analysts assert that local-based mobile services should be a growth area for mobile data in the coming years. Local-aware services like maps are pointed as a highly desirable handset feature. The .mobi has a great potential that is not currently deployed and utilized enough and only the future will show how fast the technology and mobile internet will get into the daily routine of the end user.

Thanks for a balanced look at .mobi. It's certainly a controversial topic for many people, but I like .mobi for things people would want to have available on a phone without having to dig through interesting but nonessential content like most computer based sites would provide. It just makes intuitive sense to me that someone would type .mobi to find something on a mobile phone, which is what attracted me to want to develop .mobi names and sites in the first place.
