ICANN Approves Significant Changes In Generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs)

June 21, 2011; 01:53 AM

The online business companies, financial groups, non-profit organizations, and governments were discussing the opportunities to increase the number of Top Level Domains for the last several years. No one was able to trace out a solution, until today when ICANN has solved this problem in its 41st Annual Meet in Singapore.

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers, has finalized the face of future Internet by approving the Historical Change in Domain Naming System. In special meeting, the plan to include hundreds of generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) has been approved with 13 votes. Whereas, 1 vote was opposing this plan and other 2 votes were refrained.

Currently, there are only 22 top-level-domains including .org, .net, .com, .co, .edu etc. Upcoming new gTLDs will change the way we use the Internet, opens new doors of online business and also allows you to end the domain name with any word in any language. In addition, the organizations will have more opportunities to promote their products, services, brands, community, forums and others through this TLD plan.

Peter Dengate Thrush, Chairman (Board of Directors), ICANN, said, "Today's decision will usher in a new Internet age. We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration."

This Historical Decision was based on years of discussion and debate with different organizations and governments. ICANN has also finalized ‘The Applicant Guidebook’, basically a rule book, containing the procedure to apply for a new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD). The Corporation also included the history of seven revisions to include more than 1000 comments received from public.

Soon ICANN will start a Global Campaign to promote the new gTLDs and to raise awareness about them. The applicants can apply from January 12, 2012 to April 12, 2012 for new TLDs. However, few details like name of gTLDs, and date of publishing of Applicant Guidebook in public domain are not declared officially while writing this news. Stay tuned with us for more updates on ICANN Meet and generic Top Level Domains.
