The process of domain name registration may seem simple when you are setting out to purchase your virtual spot on the web, but there can be things hidden in the process that will leave you scratching your head. Instead of finding out about these things the hard way, make sure to look for warning signs before you register your domain name with any company.

Reading the Fine Print

It may seem like a standard terms of service agreement, but as everyone is starting to learn, companies can slip almost any clause into these agreements because they know a majority of people using their services just won't read them. Companies with a good reputation and a high level of respect for its customers won't do this, but it is still imperative that you read all of the terms of service thoroughly before you register your domain with the service.

The most common issue with terms of service on domain registration sites is a transfer-out fee. That simply means that the company will be allowed to charge you if you choose to move your domain with another registering service. These transfer-out fees are automatically charged to your usually payment method and can be as much as three times your original cost. If this transfer-out fee is listed in the fine print, you should either find a new service or contact the service for more information about it and when it would apply.

Paying Long Term Rates

Everyone wants to get a deal with registering a domain name, so some registration services offer long-term deals for the customer, such as two, three or five year registration. These are great when they come with a lower price, but you must be aware of scammers who play the system by registering your domain for a single year and then taking off with the rest of your upfront payment. The best way to avoid this problem is to make sure and get testimonials and recommendations from people who are used the service on a long-term basis.

An Offer For Privacy

As a general rule, domain names are not privately held. The governing bodies for domain name registration require a public record of each domain name registered. Sometimes shady registration services offer additional privacy to keep your name from being attached to your domain. Instead of your name appearing on the domain's public record, it is the company's name. However, this means that you truly do not own the domain. If there is a reason that a dispute comes up, legally the company will retain ownership of your domain. These privacy fees should be avoided.

Price can also be a quick cue. If the price per year is too good to be true, it probably is. These are just some of the things to watch out for when buying and registering a domain name. If you do your homework, you will find a great service to use.
