Afilias, a global provider of Internet domain name registry services, recently announced that has released support for eight additional Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) language scripts(1) in the .INFO generic top-level domain. These eight additional scripts join the German (DE) script that launched in 2004. The new scripts include: Polish (PL), Swedish (SV), Danish (DA), Hungarian (HU), Icelandic (IS), Latvian (LV), Lithuanian (LT), and Korean (KO).
“As the only truly global domain, we are pleased to continue to provide innovations to .INFO that help to expand its relevance and usefulness worldwide, and at the same time bring the domain to a wider base of customers that can ensure more locally available and indigenous content for an international, non-English speaking audience,” said Roland A. LaPlante, Chief Marketing Officer for Afilias. “This is especially timely given the recent upgrades to the Internet Explorer browser and launch of IE7 which is the first version to support the IDN standard natively, making IDN resolution easy—and automatic-- for the many Internet users.”
Internet users are familiar with using domains that are written in ASCII characters – on Web sites, in e-mail, and in many other Internet applications. Afilias’ IDNs provide users with the ability to register their desired domain in their local language, using non-ASCII characters that previously did not work in Web browsers. Afilias’ IDN technology seamlessly works with IDNA Web browsers and e-mail clients so that the new domain can resolve. Internet applications, such as Internet Explorer 7, Netscape 8.1.2, Firefox 18.104.22.168, and Opera 9 support the use of IDNs.
Afilias’ IDN registrations are based on the Punycode standard approved in 2003. .INFO was the first domain to automatically accept Punycode registrations in a gTLD when it launched the German script in 2004. Those interested in registering .INFO IDN names should contact an ICANN-accredited and Afilias-authorized registrar of their choice. For additional information on the resolution of IDNs, please see the Afilias’ backgrounder at: http://www.afilias.info/register/idn/idn_background
.INFO was the first generic, unrestricted TLD to be launched since .com. Registrations in .INFO first became available in 2001. Since then, .INFO has grown to become the sixth largest TLD in the world with well over 3.5 million registrations. Over 70 percent of .INFO’s registrations are being used on the Web either for dedicated Web sites, redirects to other Web sites, parked pages, password protected pages, etcetera. .INFO currently contains over two million live sites.
Afilias (www.afilias.info), a fully integrated global provider of domain name registry services, maintains international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, sales offices in London, England and Vancouver, British Columbia, sales and operational facilities in Toronto, administrative offices in the U.S. near Philadelphia, PA, and operational offices in New Delhi, India. Afilias provides a full range of registry services leveraging proven technology that is fast, reliable and secure. Afilias provides registry services support to the .ORG gTLD (under contract to Public Interest Registry), the .INFO gTLD and several country code TLDs.
(1) The term “script” refers only to the conversion of specific non-ASCII characters to ASCII-based strings that will be registered as domain names.
