dotMobi Tool Shows Mobile Viewing Quality of Popular Internet Sites

August 24, 2006; 12:30 AM

dotMobi, the company behind the first and only Internet address created for mobile phones, today announced the availability of the .mobi mobile emulator. Users can now find out if their favorite PC-oriented Web sites are ready for mobile viewing by visiting dotMobi's homepage or http://emulator.mtld.mobi.

"The .mobi emulator is a great tool for trademark holders. It gives them an instant glimpse of how their important brand looks to millions of mobile phone users," said Trevor Shonfeld, Chairman and CEO of Roundpoint, one of the world's premier service providers for Web sites wishing to publish content to PDAs and other mobile devices. "With the exponential growth in the number of mobile users worldwide, it's paramount for companies to understand how they are represented over the pervasive mobile channel and why appropriate optimization is a prudent step."

The .mobi emulator allows companies and developers to see how their Web sites look by "emulating" a real mobile phone Internet browser and showing businesses how their current Web sites look to the world's billions of mobile phone users. As a comparison, they can also see a sample of .mobi sites which are optimized for viewing and use via a mobile phone.

Most Internet sites are grounded in desktop PC-oriented services and are not designed with a mobile phone in mind. Yet one third of the global population -- 2.29 billion people -- are connected via mobile phones today and approximately half are expected to be using a mobile Internet phone by 2008. These users expect the same ease of use browsing the Web on a phone as browsing on a PC.

The .mobi domain was launched to ensure that the growing mobile user base can easily and cost-effectively locate, access and use sites with made-for- mobile Internet content and services.

Currently, trademark and intellectual property (IP) holders are able to register their trademarks as .mobi domain names until September 22. Beginning September 26, the general public can register highly desirable .mobi domain names through a registrar at a premium price. Starting October 11, .mobi domain names can be registered through a registrar at standard prices.

The list of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) accredited registrars for dotMobi domain names can be found at: http://dotmobi.mobi/registrar.
