Tokyo, Mar 4, 2008 (Jiji Press) - The total number of registered ".jp" domain
names, or Internet addresses given to identify specific Web pages in Japan, has
exceeded the one million mark, Japan Registry Services Co. said
Tuesday.
The number of registered .jp domain names stood at 1,003,285 as
of Saturday, an increase of some 104,000 from a year before, said the company,
which issues Japanese domain names and manages registered names.
Of the
total, the number of general-use domain names stood at 622,903, while the number
of domain names for corporate users totaled 380,382, the company
said.
Domain names ending in .jp were launched in 1989.
The number
of Japanese domain names surged after 2001, when corporate users were allowed to
acquire domain names for brand products and individuals for personal Web sites
such as blogs.
