China starts .mobi domain name registration

Beijing Xin Wang Hu Lian (www.DNS.com.cn) Technologies Ltd., a leading mobile Internet provider in China, announced its launch of the .mobi (dot mobi) domain name registration service.

.mobi is the first top level domain dedicated to delivering the Internet to mobile devices. Authorized by mTLD, a mobile domain name management
organization, and ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names Numbers), DNS became the first and only authorized registration service
provider.

.mobi is a top level domain name, same as .com and .net. It was approved by ICANN to open the domain registration for handsets and mobile terminals. Subscribers can put in the domain name on mobile terminals like PDA, to browse the websites designed specially for them.

A DNS official told Interfax that registrations to Chinese companies will be given priority starting May 22, and all other trademark holdersin China can register their trademark as .mobi domain names from June 12 to August 21. Beginning on August 28, .mobi registration is open to thepublic. The user fee for the .mobi domain name is RMB 200 (USD 25) per year.
