U.S. Provider ENUM Trial Announced

May 17, 2006; 04:05 AM

DENVER - The Country Code 1 ENUM LLC (LLC) announced the launch of a second ENUM technology trial that will focus on service provider interconnection requirements. The LLC also announced the formation of a new committee to coordinate testing activities among participants in the upcoming U.S. Provider ENUM trial. Telecommunication Service Providers (TSPs) that have an interest in participating in this trial should contact the LLC by email at [email protected]. A meeting of interested parties will be scheduled in the June 2006 timeframe. Details will be posted on the LLC web site (http://enumllc.com) when available.

The U.S. Provider ENUM trial will be based on the "Framework Document for a U.S. Provider ENUM Trial," recently adopted by the LLC membership at their April 25-27, 2006, meeting. The Framework can be found on the LLC web site. The trial of Provider ENUM (sometimes referred to as "Carrier" or "Infrastructure" ENUM) is expected to be conducted over a four-month period beginning in July. This trial will be carried out in parallel with the current End-User ENUM trial and will use a different domain name and separate numbering resources. As with the End-User ENUM trial, no commercial end-users will be involved in the Provider ENUM trial.

TSPs with assigned numbering resources that seek to exchange end-user traffic with other TSPs on an IP basis are encouraged to participate. All participants are responsible for their costs and will be expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the LLC. Membership in the LLC is not required to participate in either trial, but is welcomed.

The results of the trial will form the basis of requirements for a commercial implementation to assist U.S. service providers. The CC1 ENUM LLC plans are consistent with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) ENUM Working Group efforts to progress a global solution for Provider ENUM. The proposed U.S. implementation, targeted for 2007, should be easily transitioned to the global solution when it becomes available.

About Country Code 1 ENUM LLC

The founding companies of Country Code 1 ENUM LLC are seeking to build a commercial implementation consistent with the relevant open standards of the IETF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) upon which ENUM is based. ENUM associates traditional telephone numbers with Internet domain names, combining the reach and capabilities of the Internet with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to enable new communications capabilities. The LLC will help establish and administer a public infrastructure that will promote the development of ENUM technology in a single, carrier-class manner within the countries of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that choose to participate. The North American implementation of ENUM will adhere to national and industry privacy requirements.

The members of the CC1 ENUM LLC include AT&T, BellSouth, GoDaddy.com, Sprint-Nextel and Verizon.
