NewBay Software to Provide "dotmobi" Personal Websites for Mobile Phones
By Derek Iwasiuk The '.mobi' domain is specifically targeted at mobile friendly websites and is set to become the standard for mobile internet consumer browsing. Once launched, FoneBlog users will be able to buy the domain name www.johnsmith.mobi instead of "www.foneblog.ie/johnsmith", where they can store images, contacts and content and share their personal websites with other internet and mobile users. NewBay has previously offered the option to buy '.com', '.org' or '.net' domain name for their personal websites. "NewBay's vision is to provide every mobile phone user with a personal website that provides a home for users mobile activities. The ability to add the latest '.mobi' domain name further personalizes a user website and increases subscriber loyalty for Mobile Operators," commented Paddy Holahan, CEO at NewBay Software. "The dotmobi domain, set for commercial launch this summer, will revolutionise the relationship between the internet and mobile devices by the clear identification of made-for-mobile internet sites and applications. We are delighted to have NewBay on board as a showcase for the dotmobi domain and to demonstrate the impact it will have on consumer mobile internet browsing," said Neil Edwards, General Manager of mTLD Ltd. About mTLD The company gained approval from ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) for the '.mobi' Sponsored Top level Domain (TLD) in the second half of 2005. mTLD is backed by leading mobile operators, network and device manufacturers, and internet content providers.
