Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) June 21, 2009 -- As ICANN - the Internet Corportion for Assigned Names and Numbers - prepares to convene in Sydney, Australia, the debate over its plan to allow expansion of Web addresses, or gTLDs, is accelerating.
Nowhere is that clearer than in the program begun two months ago by Pool.com and Quintaris, partners in providing business and technical support for new gTLDs, that allows consumers to pre-order Internet domain names in likely new registries that will compete with existing ones like .com, .net or .au.
According to the companies, five new potential extensions -- .deal, .forsale, .free, .gay and .God - bring the total list to 70. The candidates are drawn from public statements made by likely applicants. There are about 10,000 individual domain names being pre-ordered on a daily basis.
There is no cost to the consumer until the name is registered.
According to Tony Farrow, head of business development at Quintaris, "There are entrepreneurs and marketing executives who are beginning to see the value of operating a registry of names that let people identify with a brand or business." ICANN has set a likely timeline for introduction of the new domain name registries that will begin early next year

The new domain name registries added most recently to the pre-order list have been the subject of increased attention, Farrow said, "on the basis of their likely strong market position."
On the basis of an email request to the company ([email protected]), any gTLD can be added to the pre-order program, helping add a statistical basis to the registry operator's business plan. The company also offers a set of Web-based marketing tools to accelerate adoption.
