OpenDNS Announces New Premium, Cloud-Based DNS Infrastructure and Security Services for Enterprises and SMBs

OpenDNS Unveils Plans to Introduce New Service Offerings Tailored to Meet Business Needs; OpenDNS Enterprise and OpenDNS Deluxe Delivered in Response to Customer Demand

September 14, 2009; 09:33 AM

San Francisco, CA, September 14, 2009 -- OpenDNS, provider of the award-winning service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced it is currently developing OpenDNS Deluxe and OpenDNS Enterprise, two new service offerings designed to meet the DNS infrastructure and security needs of SMBs and large enterprises. The new premium services -- built on the same core rock-solid reliable, zero-downtime DNS platform now used and trusted by more than 15 million people around the world, including some of the world's largest organizations -- are currently being used by a select group of 25 customers in early access, and will be generally available later this year.

Since OpenDNS launched in 2006, the company has experienced continually heightened demand for a subscription service for businesses and organizations that both adds more features such as advanced Web content filtering, additional customization and the ability to delegate and share OpenDNS account administration, as well as allows the removal of advertisements from the OpenDNS experience. Further, since OpenDNS introduced IdeaBank, the component of the OpenDNS community where customers can suggest new features to be added and enhancements to be made to the service, feedback has been clear that demand exists for a service tailored to meet the needs of businesses.

"The Internet's biggest secret is that most Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure is insecure and unreliable," said Daniel Golding, Vice President and Research Director for 451 Group. "Enterprises and well informed organizations are looking for better, faster, and more secure DNS solutions. A combination of better DNS with intelligent and selective blocking is ideal for small-medium businesses and enterprises alike."

Unlike competing Web content filtering and Web security products and services from vendors such as Websense and BlueCoat, the new services from OpenDNS work in the cloud, without requiring an on-premise appliance. The cloud-based delivery of security services reduces overall IT spend by requiring zero implementation and maintenance fees. Further, providing Web content filtering through the cloud enables newly published Web sites to be added to the OpenDNS filtering system in real-time, as opposed to requiring daily or weekly software updates.

Setup and deployment of the new service will be a simple, painless process that allows large enterprises to be up and running with OpenDNS instantly -- working across multiple locations in just days.

"The OpenDNS product and feature roadmap has always been driven 100 percent by customer feedback and the release of OpenDNS Deluxe and OpenDNS Enterprise is no different," said OpenDNS Founder and CTO David Ulevitch. "The new premium services are designed to meet the needs of businesses around the world - working in the cloud and providing security functionality, making networks faster and making networks more reliable. We look forward to introducing you to OpenDNS Deluxe and OpenDNS Enterprise and stand firmly committed to continuing to improve upon our classic - and still free - existing service, currently used by millions of people around the world."
