Have you considered theming your domaining? You may know particular markets better than other but do you focus on these or buy wherever you see an opportunity? Identifying your strengths can give a real focus to your domaining and help you carve out a niche.

Advantages of theming your domaining

  • You build up expertise
  • You know your market
  • You can build up a network of related websites
  • You become a major player in a particular niche

Using my strengths for domaining?

What are your hobbies? Do you play any sports? Do you like particular books, plays, movies or music? Is there an area in which you have always been interested in but never explored? Have you had particular experiences or life events?

Harnessing your unique life experience and interests and using these to focus your domaining can bring more satisfaction and profit to your life. These are more likely the areas where you will spot an opportunity before anyone else and you are less likely to become demotivated.

Making money from themed domaining

You can earn money in some niches very easily while in others it is more difficult.

Parking

Some niches will not have the ad inventory to enable a profit to be made from parking. Ads that are served may be off target and you fail to harness the power that a targeted domain has i.e. a targeted visitor. It will often follow that PPC programs such as Adsense will also not have sufficient inventory.

Many niches do not have the traffic to sustain a decent profit from parking though the traffic is highly targeted. A combination of low traffic and low ad inventory can mean that parking is not viable. On the other hand if you have highly targeted traffic then your conversion rate will be high.

Develop the domains

You can develop small websites on these domains and look for opportunities to market to your visitors. Developing content for those domains and providing the niche community with an opportunity to interact can be very rewarding. This can lead to a very loyal and motivated readership.

Marketing to a niche

You may find a niche where no obvious ad seems to exist. For example if you decided to specialize in bird watching domains, you may have a hard time finding something to market to those visitors.

Here is where a little market research comes in handy. If you poll your visitors, you will quickly find out that they use expensive binoculars and scopes. Many will also use digital cameras. What about outdoor wear? Posters, books and maps also sell well to this market. Again if you already are an enthusiast, you will know these things.

Cross-selling with your themed domains

Another advantage of themed domains is that you can market a second website to visitors to your first website. If you succeed in passing a visitor from your first website to a second, then you have doubled your opportunity to earn money from that visitor.

Taking the example of bird watching, you could market a bird photography website to them or a nature travel website. By advertising within your network you keep the profits to yourself rather than refer customers outside the network and you maximize the profit per visitor.

Maximizing profit per visitor

Many niche websites by definition do not receive large amounts of traffic so you need to maximize your profit per visitor. Themed domaining and a niche network of websites can help you make the most of the traffic you do get.

Simple math will tell you the value of this approach. If the goal is to earn $1000, would you rather 5000 clicks at $0.20 or 500 clicks at $2?

You can sell higher ticket items in such niche websites because many of the visitors are return visitors and so trust has been established.

Have a look at your domain inventory and next time you purchase domains, think about theming.
