Have your own customized wedding website. Thats what WeddingChannel.com is offering their visitors including domain registration. A clever way to sell a domain name and website template and still tie them to WeddingChannel.com. There is a lesson to be learned here for all of us.  Adding value to a domain name and marketing it as a package is a great way to push non-generic names.

Marketing domains as a package

WeddingChannel.com offer a tiered set of packages including a free site if the visitor signs up with the website. They offer to register a unique domain name for the couple e.g. GregAndDaisy.com. They then have a variety of templates available with fancier templates with the more expensive packages as well as allowing videos to be uploaded.

You can see a list of domains real couples have registered through this service. These domains would be worth nothing by themselves but here they become desireable and you can imagine a couple hoping that their desired domain is not already registered.

Of course the couple will promote their website to all their friends and family and in doing so, are also promoting the hosting website. This combined with word of mouth is a great viral marketing tool and is perfectly targeted to the right audience.

Making domains desireable

The key here is not to try to rely on the intrinsic value of a domain name but to market a domain name as part of a value added package. Lets face it. There is huge competition for killer generic domains names and everyone is competing for lower tier domain names. That is not to say there isn’t a profit to be made with domaining alone but there are more thoughtful approaches with less competition.

What about small business owners? Restaurants, pizza shops, bars could use targeted templates to create a website and then they would be promoting their websites through their businesses. What about businesses which complement each other where cross-selling is possible? How about a community of business owners with templated websites?

Pet owners love to show off their pets so why not provide them with website templates and domains using their pet’s name? The possibilities are huge.

Hopefully this has your creative juices flowing. Have a look back at my post about theming your domaining and you will see how this post is another spin on theming.
