If you already have a website, you have access to some unique information. It is so often seen but rarely acted upon. The search terms web users type in to find your web site give you some real insight into what are the most popular search terms in your arena. You can leverage these to obtain new domain names and capture more people from these queries.

Finding your visitors search terms

There are many ways to mine information on your web site’s visitors. You can use the log files provided by your hosting company, web statistics programs or third party tools.

Log Files

Log files are usually available through the control panel of your hosting company. These are full of good information but look ugly and can be hard to read. Nevertheless it can pay off to search through the files and find out how visitors got to your website, what interested them and what they ignored.

Plugins/Extensions

There are many packages available to track visitor statistics. For WordPress, I use WordPress.com statistics plugin which is available from the WordPress website. These packages usually have nice graphical representations of the data and are much easier to understand and digest.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a very powerful free package that provides a wealth of information about visitors to your website and I highly recommend it. It can be customized to collect and display the information that is most important to you.You can even track the entry and exit pages for visitors.

Convert searches to domain names

You can examine the search terms people use to get to your website and check if they are available as domain names. If you have a long query, you can truncate it or break it into two or more pieces. Many of these domains will not give you good type-in traffic but they can be used to create a mini-site.

You can now capture the visitors searching for this query and also collect search terms centered around this search query. This can often lead you to a related topic but one that becomes distinct from your original website and possibly was not obvious in the first place.

Twice the chance to convert

Since it is a related topic, you can also link from your original website to your new website and drive visitors to the new website. This can give you two bites at the cherry because you have two opportunities to sell to a visitor on the old website and now the new website. The second website may be a better match to your visitor’s interests and so you may have a higher conversion and return rate.

A word of warning

I do not recommend using this technique to purchase domain names and then sell them on to end users. Why? Well you would be creating competition for your original website with highly related domain names. If the buyer develops these domains, then you are likely to lose at least some traffic to them.
